Where the Breeze Finds the Wildflowers

I had the incredible chance to spend a week on Star Island as a resident artist in the Isles of Shoals this summer. I spent my days painting plein air, gave two watercolor workshops, and met so many wonderful people. It was a truly special experience.
Back in my studio, I’ve been returning to some of the moments that stayed with me from my time on the island. The Oceanic Hotel, where we stayed, is filled with a wonderful sense of history.
On our way to our bedroom, there was a grand staircase with an enormous mirror and a beautiful view of the ocean. My bedroom was just around the corner.
On a small table sat a jar filled with wildflowers growing on the island. It was such a simple scene, but there was something about it – the flowers, the ocean beyond, the old mirror, and the gentle breeze coming through the window – that captured the feeling of the island for me.
With this painting, I’m trying to recreate that sense of wonder and warmth. Can you feel the breeze coming in?
